Objective: This research aims to investigate the characteristics of vowels by analyzing the intellectually disabled children¡¯s formant frequency F1, F2, F3, F4. And also, this research is to collect the basic data on the voice of children with intellectual disabilities from the listener¡¯s point of view.
Method: Participants are 5 intellectually disabled children(3 of them are in Class 2 and the other 2 children are in Class 3), and there are additional 5 normal children as a control group for comparing each group¡¯s voices. F1, F2, F3, F4 of all children¡¯s voices were analyzed into the average frequency, the standard deviation, and more by using the descriptive statistics, and the differences between each group were examined with the independent t-test(SPSS 22.0).
Results: Children with intellectual disabilities were observed to be significantly higher in F1 of /u/ (p=.020), F1 of /e/(p=.000), F1 of /o/(p=.003) than normal children.
Conclusion: The children with intellectual disabilities narrow their ligaments when vocalizing vowels /u, /e/, and /o/.
